Centertainment. The new Centertainment outings begin in January. If you enjoy theatre parties, concerts, spectator sports, and other special events, join with friends from the Center for these entertaining excursions. Coming up are trips to Peter Pan, The Unsinkable Molly Brown, Fences, and Showboat. Call the Center to get on the mailing list!
Country Dance. Join us for "An Evening of Country Dance" at the Center on Friday, December 8, from 8:00-11:00 p.m. Live music will be performed by the "No Questions Asked String Band". This will be a fun holiday event, with dances taught and prompted by Beck Hill. Admission is $5.00. Call Josh, 521-4343, or Doug, 281-7418, for more information.
Mayor White. Cleveland's new mayor-elect, Michael R. White, made a surprise visit to the Center during his mayoral campaign expressing his support for the Center's work and solidarity with the lesbian-gay community. White later told the Chronicle he supports protections against discrimination in city ordinances and possibly a domestic partners law in Cleveland.
Annual Meeting. The Center held its 1989 annual membership meeting on Sunday, October 29. Several bylaw revisions were approved and two new members of the Board of Directors were elected. One is Dolores Noll of Kent, known for work as Faculty Advisor with the Kent Gay-Lesbian Foundation (KGLF). Noll is also active with the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force and was also a recent candidate for the NGLTF board. The other new member is this writer, Bob Laycock, formerly of GayWaves on WRUW-FM, and presently an officer in the international Lambda Amateur Radio Club and also a Cleveland Pride Committee member.
Charlie Callander Awards. The 1988 Charlie Callander Awards were presented at the Center's Annual Meeting, recognizing exemplary volunteer contributions during 1988. Sue Schnur won in recognition of her work for the Center and the community in Pride '89
and the Picket the Bigot committee. Two veteran hotline volunteers also won for many years of continuous dedication and service.
1988 Annual Report. The Center's 1988 Annual Report is hot off the presses and available for your reading enjoyment. Don't wait for the movie! (Who do you think they'll cast for Aubrey?) Drop in and pick up a copy, or we'll mail you one. Self-addressed stamped envelopes are helpful.
Conferences. The Center has been well represented at recent conferences in Washington D.C. In early November, the Living Room was represented at the National AIDS Network Technical Assistance Workshop.
Aubrey Wertheim and Dolores Noll represented the Center at the "Creating Change" conference of the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force, November 1112. Topics included new domestic partners laws, new direct-action tactics, defamation of gays and lesbians in the media, and combating so-called "traditional values" coalitions. Noll was a panelist in a workshop discussing gay and lesbian studies.
Grants. Hearty thanks go out to NOCI and the Leeward in Ashtabula for recent grant contributions to the Center. NOCI provided $560 to PRYSM, allowing gay-lesbian youth information packets to be mailed to all local high schools and agencies providing youth services.
The Leeward assisted the Living Room with a $600 contribution.
Sawdust Dept. Thanks to Miles Doane and his merry band of renovators for the new improvements to the Art McDonald meeting room. We now have new paneling and new stage, plus new blinds and a rebuilt kitchen counter. Meanwhile, the Center has received a great exterior face lift, courtesy of our landlord, the Ohio City Redevelopment Association, and the City of Cleveland. Our new sign gives us great visibility.
Donations. The Center needs a new IBM Selectric or other heavy duty typewriter. Then again, we could use a Hewlett-Packard mainframe, too!
Homophobia. The Center continues to combat homophobia around town. Recent talks by Aubrey Wertheim and Martha Pontoni have been delivered to CSU's phys ed department, and CWRU's School of Medicine and resident advisors.
Center Sundays. Finally, we bid a fond farewell to Emmanual MCC as they leave for their new home at 10034 Lorain Ave. But, we welcome the Family of God Community Church, which will now meet at the Center with Rev. Clint Anderson presiding.
